Community Foundations
Since its formation by an Act of Parliament in 1870, the United Synagogue has been a cornerstone of Jewish life in London and beyond.
The foundation stones here are saved from synagogues where the community has moved to join others or no longer exists. They chronicle the demographic changes of London Jews that have taken place since the creation of the United Synagogue.
Each one tells a story of community, tradition and the unyielding spirit of our ancestors. These stones are a testament to the enduring legacy of our faith, built on the principles of community, learning and prayer.
One can see how communities took the opportunity to mark the efforts of those who worked tirelessly for their synagogues. Their roles and duties are recorded for perpetuity with impressive titles such as Founder, Very Reverend, Chief Executive, Chairman of Classes Committee and Honorary Secretary.
As one walks among these stones, one can reflect on the generations that came before us. Once vibrant communities remind us of the importance of preserving our heritage and passing it on to future generations.
