Edgar Santos, Head Boy of JFS School 2023, talks about Willesden Jewish Cemetery
JFS School (originally known as the Jews’ Free School and later Jewish Free School) is Europe’s largest Jewish school. It was founded in 1732 in London’s East End and is now based in Kenton in the North London borough of Brent. Throughout its long history it was associated with many outstanding Jewish historic personalities and educationalists, and several of them are laid to rest in Willesden Jewish Cemetery.
In this clip, Edgar is talking about Myer David Davis who, in 1871, became first Hebrew Master of the Jew's Free School. He also became Headmaster of the Shaare Tikvah (Gates of Hope) School. Davis researched unpublished records of Anglo Jewry prior to the expulsion in 1290, having been given access to the Hebrew records in the Chapter Houses at Westminster Abbey, York and Norwich. This eventually led to the establishment of the Jewish Historical Society.
