Would you like to help make the cemetery a greener and more biodiverse place?

Purpose of the role

Our dedicated team of volunteer gardeners work throughout the year to maintain and improve the tranquil and green atmosphere of the cemetery. This includes planting new gardens, assisting seasonal clear-ups, maintaining insect hotels, pruning and weeding. They also help the project team to trial and monitor new ways of promoting natural habitats and bio-diversity.

Key responsibilities:

  • To plant up new garden areas and take care of them.

  • To assist in seasonal gardening tasks throughout the year, providing extra resource to the work of the existing staff grounds team. This may include planting, sowing, tidying, weeding, dead-heading, pruning, sweeping, mulching, feeding, watering and clearing away trimmings.

  • Monitoring bird boxes and insect hotels.

  • Help evaluate the development of newly planted areas for their ease of maintenance and impact on nature conservation.

What we are looking for:

  • An enthusiasm for gardening (all levels of horticultural experience and expertise are welcome).

  • Ability to work in a team of people with wide ranging ages and abilities, and to follow instructions.

  • Physical capability and comfort with working outdoors in all weathers.

  • Adaptability to change tasks in the event of a funeral at short notice.

Availability:

The gardening team meet on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings for three hours including a tea break. There will also be occasional planting sessions which may be held on Sundays. Applicants should be available to volunteer at least twice a month.
