National Jewish War Memorial at Willesden Jewish Cemetery
Willesden Jewish Cemetery is proud to be the home of the UK’s first national Jewish War Memorial, which commemorates the Jewish servicemen and women, who died in the two world wars. It proudly resides on the lawn in front of the Heritage Centre.
The memorial, in the shape of an Obelisk, was designed by Ralph Hobday, architect to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, and has a Star of David incorporated instead of the normal cross. It commemorates the Jewish dead of World War One and Word War Two and is Grade II listed.
The memorial was consecrated on 14th May 1961 by Chief Rabbi Dr Israel Brodie and unveiled by Field Marshal Sir Gerald Templer.
Here is a short film about the consecration ceremony: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IB-CbujbiE
Since then, it has become a focal point of many commemoration ceremonies by the members of AJEX (The Jewish Military Association) and the start of many of our guided walks.
Join us on Sunday, 12th November, to remember many brave men and women, who lost their lives in the wars, on our special #RemembranceDay guided walk: https://www.willesdenjewishcemetery.org.uk/events/ww2
