Discover the Wonders of Nature

On Wednesday, 24 July 2024, we had our first success with children's holiday workshops. Three families came for the Discover The Wonders of Nature workshop, which was led by our volunteers.

We had eight children of primary school age, ranging from nursery to 10 years old. It is not easy to offer something to engage such a wide age range, but, according the feedback of the parents, we managed to keep everyone entertained and happy, and everyone got something positive out of the two hours they spent with us.

We started by watching the introductory film, and then went for a short walk, looking at insects, plants and monuments. Special thanks to our bug expert Deepali, who told us fascinating facts and the birds and the bees.

We also told stories of some of the people buried in the cemetery and discussed Jewish customs and traditions around nature. All the children came from Jewish families and demonstrated great knowledge and interest in this, which was rewarding to see.

On returning to the Heritage Centre, children enjoyed making bug hotels and decorating butterfly shapes with natural materials. These simple activities offered great opportunities to express creatively, and also have things to take home, which would benefit wildlife in their own gardens. Some of the butterflies were amazing works of art!

Next event in the Discover of Wonders of Nature series will be in October Half Term, on Tuesday, 29th October:  Spud-tastic Journey: Potatoes Through Time & Craft. Please come and bring your kids!
